Cost For Interior Shutters
By djmckerrow
When you are planning out your investment in plantation shutters, it is pretty easy to estimate the approximate cost. As with any custom product, there are factors that can reduce or increase your costs…paint color, stain color, custom paint, specialty shapes, etc.
When it comes to custom interior shutters, you can approximate the price. For the standard window that is about 3 ft. wide, 5-6 ft. tall and just shaped like a rectangle; the approximate price will be around $300-$600 depending on features chosen. If you just pick a standard paint color and no other special features, your price will probably be in the $300-$450 range. Specialty shapes and special features can be much more. Installation is included in this price range. Your local shutter professional will educate you on all these factors when they come to your house.

Biggest Mistake With Custom Shutters…
By djmckerrow
The biggest mistake any consumer can make with custom interior shutters is to try and measure for the shutters themselves. I know that we all want to save money and that there are sites out there that will tell you to measure and order yourself. For some, who are very handy and technical, this may work. They may save “a little” money; but, one mistake is all it takes to lose all your potential savings!!!
The shutter professionals we use will come out to your house, measure and order the shutters for you. If there is a problem with the size or fit of your plantation shutters, the shutter pro will have to fix the mistake; because, they made the mistake – NOT YOU!!! It is their intent to give you a stress-free and easy shutter buying experience.
There are many factors to take into consideration when you want to measure for shutters.
1. How deep is your window?
2. Do you have window trim?
3. What type of windows do you have?
4. What is size of window and/or opening?
5. Are you covering doors?
6. What is best place to install shutters?
7. Do you need any templates?
and many more things to consider…
Make your life easier, let a shutter professional take care of your shutters. One small window can cost you $300-$500…so, mistakes can be costly. Remember, stress-free and easy; we will do that for you.

Custom Shutters For Free!!
By djmckerrow
How would you like to get custom interior shutters and have them actually make you more money than what you paid for them? Well, it is possible to do just that.
When you shop for window coverings of any kind, shutters have a very clear financial benefit to you as the purchaser. As compared to blinds, shades, or draperies, custom shutters are actually the only window treatment that is proven to increase the value of your home. So, when you go to sell your house later, the real estate agent and home appraiser will put a higher value on your home just because you have shutters installed.
Ask any real estate agent or appraiser, no other window treatment has that affect on your home value. So, buy your shutters knowing that you could potentially get all your money back for them later; thus, they will be FREE!!

What Does Lifetime Limited Warranty Mean???
By djmckerrow
It is very simple. When you buy custom shutters, you should get a lifetime of performance out of them. They are custom built to last “pretty much” forever. But, what is that limited all about in the lifetime warranty? Well, the only limitation is that the warranty only extends to the original purchaser. You cannot purchase custom shutters, sell your house, and then expect the shutter warranty to apply to the new owner.
For example, if you purchase limited lifetime custom shutters and you live in that house, with the shutters in their original windows, you can use your lifetime warranty for 100 years, if you are still the owner of the home. So, as the purchaser, you are covered as long as you own them.
If you sell your home with the shutters in them, usually the new owners are so pleased to have shutters that they didn’t have to buy, that they don’t worry about the warranty extending to them.
Just remember that the warranty does not cover paints and stains past the first few years, because they will naturally “age” or “fade” just like your interior walls and woodwork. As for the wood and structure of the shutter, you should have a lifetime of performance out of them.
Part of our service is ensuring that you get taken care of by prescreened, shutter professionals who we know will be there to give you high quality products and also be around in the long run to cover the shutter warranties.

What’s The Wood In Wood Shutters?
By djmckerrow
We get this question all the time. There is two main answers to this question, depending on what the customer is looking for…
First, if the homeowner wants painted shutters, this means that no matter what the wood is, that it will be completely covered in paint; so, you will not really be able to see the grain or look of the wood anyway. When the shutters are painted, the most important thing to consider is the warranty. If you get a lifetime limited warranty, it really doesn’t matter what the wood is; because it will be warrantied no matter what. The wood in the more affordable painted shutters is usually poplar or basswood. They are both great woods for painted shutters and they both usually carry a limited lifetime warranty. So, performance is almost always lifelong with either wood. You can get some more expensive woods, like maple, for example, but you can’t really see a difference on painted shutters. These are great things to bring up to your shutter professional when they come out to your house.
Second, if the homeowner wants stained shutters, the choice of wood is a little more detailed. When a wood is stained, you can still see the grain and “imperfections” in the wood. Since you can see the grain, and the shutter will be installed near other stained woods that are already in the house, the grains need to be looked at to make sure the homeowner likes the match up of woods. Once again, your shutter pro will have all these samples with them at your home. The most frequently used wood for affordable, wood stained shutters is basswood. 99% of the time, this wood is great for shutter stain jobs. If the homeowner doesn’t like the look of stained basswood, there is an abundance of other choices out there. Usually, these choices require a greater investment, and not every shutter retailer will have access to them. Discuss this with your local shutter professional, and if you need greater assistance, feel free to email iwantshutters.com and we will get it done for you.

Do I Have To Cover My Arch Above My Window???
By djmckerrow
No, some people do and some people don’t. You can do either. Let me explain.
Let’s say that you have a window on the front of your house with a standard square/rectangle window below and a curved window (arch) right above it. Also, the standard window and the arch are attached to each other; there is no break or piece of wall to separate the window and arch. So, to the naked eye, it is only one opening with a “squarish” window below and a curved (arch) attached to it at the top. What to do here for shutters?
If you only want a shutter to cover the bottom “rectangle window”, then you can just buy a shutter for the bottom and leave the curved part of the window uncovered. Our shutter professionals can do this easily. Visually, you would see a custom shutter on the bottom of the window and then it would be open over the curved, arch part of the window. Many customers do this because they want the light and view that the upper arch, curve give them while the bottom is covered for privacy.
If you don’t like that, that is OK. Your shutter professional can also cover the whole opening, arch and all, in one custom shutter package. Then you have shutter at the bottom with a shuttered arch shape covered above it. This situation gives you many options, so please take your time with your shutter pro and let them explain all available options to you. These shutters are gorgeous.
Bottom line is that you don’t have to cover anything you don’t want to and also that there isn’t anything we can’t cover for you with shutters when you want that!!!

The Best Advice For Shutters In New Construction Homes…
By djmckerrow
So, you are building your own home, or you are having a home built by a builder. What a great experience. The sense of expectation is great as you make all the decisions and watch the project progress. You can’t wait to get into the new home. As the construction is coming to a close, most people start thinking about their window coverings. In most cases how you cover the windows is one of the last decisions, and usually one of the parts of the budget that gets cut, or reduced, because you spent too much on earlier home-related decisions.
We have consulted on thousands of these scenarios. We get there to help the homeowner choose window coverings. The customer wants custom shutters in parts of the house. Then, when we tell them that the only way to install the shutters is on the window trim; the homeowner can’t believe it. It is hard for them to accept that the “fancy” window trim that they had installed on all their windows will be covered by the interior shutters. They didn’t realize that with casement windows and also tilt-in-to-clean windows, that shutters can’t be installed inside the window without impeding the function of the window parts. It is not their fault. Well, there is a solution; but, the fix requires thinking ahead of time and working with your builder and shutter supplier.
First, most shutters can be built with a custom design frame around the shutters, so the shutter and its frame can be installed and take the place of the trim that was going to be put on the window. This is usually cheaper than the builder putting his trim on the windows, and it is a custom trim that perfectly matches the shutters. The fix requires the homeowner to get this worked out with the shutter professionals and builders early on in building process. Our shutter professionals can get this done for you, just ensure that you contact us early enough in the building process!!!
Second, if you still want the “builder supplied” trim installed on the windows, that is fine. What you can do is ask the builder to have the trim installed about 1 1/2″ – 2″ outside of the window opening on all 4 sides. This allows your shutter professional to install the shutters inside the trim and you get the look you wanted. Just remember, this decision needs to be made at the time that the trim decisions are made.

Most Important Decision For Shutter Customers
By djmckerrow
Most shutter customers consider their louver choice to be their most important consideration. Sometimes, a customer can get stuck when they are trying to choose between the 2 1/2, 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 inch louvers. Since each louver size gives their house a different look, this is a big choice for shutter customers.
What we find is that the 2 1/2 inch louver is very traditional. This size is small compared to the other choices. What this means is that you will have more louvers or lines in your windows than with the larger louver choices. It is a great louver size for those customers looking for tradition.
The 3 1/2 inch louver is the most popular today. Since the modern houses have more windows and many customers value the views from their house, they want more glass and view. So, they pick the larger size louver.
The 4 1/2 inch louver is very large and great for large windows and for great views. If you just want shutters with the least amount of louver lines in your window, you can choose the larger 4 1/2 inch louvers.
The good thing about louver choice is that, in most cases, the louvers all cost the same; so, the shutter customer can get what they want without any extra cost or stress.
Choose the louver you like, they will be great. Also, don’t forget, your local shutter professional will have samples of all their louvers, so you can make an educated decision.
